“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.” Joseph H. Pilates

The Pilates (pronounced Puh-LAH-teez) method was developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 1900’s. He was born in Germany a frail and sickly child, but was determined to strengthen himself. As a result he developed his method of body conditioning which he later called “The Art of Contrology”.

He continued his passion for true health and fitness while interned during WWI where he had amazing results with his fellow internees. Later in the war he was an orderly in a hospital on the Isle of Man. This was where he began to develop his equipment by attaching springs to hospital beds so even the sick and injured could benefit from his method.

In 1926 Joseph moved to New York City where he opened his first Pilates Studio. He created quite a following with dancers, performers and athletes. In 1945 he wrote “Return to Life” a book which focused on restoring the body through movement and a conscious mind.

The Pilates method took hold and today millions of Americans reap the benefits of Joseph H. Pilate's vision and dreams.
